The Bewley family opened the first Oriental Cafe in South Great Georges Street in 1894. Two years later, the Westmoreland Street cafe was opened by Ernest Bewley. His motto was 'I want the best of everything and that's not good enough'. For him, quality was of the essence and that trading philosophy has always permeated Bewley's Cafes.
The history of Bewley's is truly remarkable in it's own right, contributing a brand heritage that few other brands in Ireland can emulate. A Quaker family originally founded the firm, and the company was one of the first in Ireland to share profits and ownership with the workers.
In 1835 Charles Bewley was the first person to import tea directly from China to Ireland. But it was cafes, in particular, that captured the hearts of the Irish. Crackling log fires, warm oak-panelled walls and sunlight flooding through the richly coloured stained glass windows. The air was full of aromas of freshly made coffee and quality edibles.
In 1990 the Grafton Street Cafe is described by the Council of Europe as 'One of the great cafes of Europe'. In 1998 Bewley's Cafe in Grafton Street is reborn. A unique blend of old and new, a rare experience, retaining all the magic and splendour of this classic Dublin legacy, mixed with twenty-first century business acumen and know-how.
Matted in forest green and framed beautifully in black or cherry wood.
